What Is 2 Million Tons of Rice Husks?—The Scale of a "Discarded Resource" in Numbers

Japan is one of the world's leading rice-growing nations. According to MAFF statistics, domestic rice output has hovered around 7 million tons a year. The husks produced when brown rice is separated from the ear are said to equal roughly 20–25% of the rice's weight, which is the basis for the annual figure of 2 million tons (source: NARO).

For comparison, Japan's food loss as announced by the Ministry of the Environment was about 4.64 million tons a year (FY2022). Two million tons of rice husks equals roughly 43% of that. In other words, waste on the same scale as the "food-loss reduction" issue Japan is tackling is quietly and continually occurring in rice farming.

Until now, rice husks have been partly used as fuel, as bedding in livestock farming, and plowed into fields. But technical and economic costs have kept the effective-use ratio low, and as the term "agricultural byproduct" suggests, they have been treated not as the star but as a bit player—or a cost to be processed.

The name "Kami (神)" carries respect for Japan's unique philosophy of nature. Against the backdrop of the deep bond between rice cultivation and Shinto—the Japanese myth in which Amaterasu bestowed the rice ear—one senses an intent to find cultural meaning in rice husks, the "garment of rice."

In the Context of an Agricultural Circular Economy: Potential Beyond Food-Loss Reduction

This project matters because it goes beyond the context of mere food-loss reduction.

Most food loss currently under discussion, such asthe 4.64 million tons of food loss announced by the Ministry of the Environment, is about discarding food that is still edible. But what "Kami – 神 -" confronts isagricultural byproducts that were never recognized as "food" in the first place. This is a more fundamental approach that questions the very concept.

Looking globally,the world's food-waste cost is said to reach $540 billion a year. Much of this stems from "not seeing what could be food as food." Turning rice husks into food can be read as an attempt to send part of the solution from Japan to the world.

It is also noteworthy in the context of food tech. Recently, food-sharing services like Too Good To Go haveentered the Japanese market, and consumers' "awareness of food waste" has steadily risen. Rice husks, however, were a challenge in a class of their own. The hard outer shell, rich in silicon (silica), poses a high technical hurdle for turning it into food. That is exactly why what "Kami – 神 -" is trying to achieve is not merely a business-model refresh buta challenge to rewrite the boundary of what food can be.

As NARO materials show, the silica content of rice husks reaches about 20%. This silica draws attention from the semiconductor and cosmetics industries as a functional material, but its application to food remains a largely uncharted area. Just how "Kami – 神 -" will achieve "turning it into food" is a detail to be revealed at the April 15 pre-opening.
