What is Organic JAS certification?
Organic JAS certification is a certification system granted to agricultural products and processed foods that may be labeled "organic" based on the Japanese Agricultural Standards (JAS). It applies to produce grown by methods that, in principle, use no pesticides or chemical fertilizers and that are mindful of the environment and ecosystems. Certified products may display the "Organic JAS mark."
In the industry it's treated as the flagship of "organic certification," and it's often deemed essential for domestic and overseas distribution and export.
Features and background of Organic JAS certification
Origin of the system: Established as a system in 2000. One of the JAS standards defined by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries
Certifying body: A registered certifying body examines the management framework of producers and manufacturers and certifies them when standards are met
Cultivation standard: In principle, no chemically synthesized pesticides or fertilizers are used. Genetic-modification technology is also prohibited
Conversion period: Obtaining certification normally requires cultivating without chemical fertilizers or pesticides for 3 or more years
International positioning: Like the organic certifications of the EU and the US, it plays a role in securing trust in trade
