It seems people of the Jomon period took in calories from nuts and supplemented moisture with pears, and through the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras—and enjoyed even in the Heisei era—it is one of the fruits representative of twentieth-century Japan. Until the twentieth century, red pears such as Kosui and Hosui were popular, and it was in the early twentieth century that people began eating green pears too. The green pear bearing the name Nijisseiki (“twentieth century”) was born around this time.

After that, both red and green pears had various varieties improved and increased their kin, and sweet red pears became more and more popular, while the crisply sweet-and-sour green pear that made a stir in the twentieth century is becoming something close to a nostalgic taste.

Summer vacation begins with watermelon and ends around the time you eat pears after a bath. To express a pear that revives somehow nostalgic memories, we have likened it to a letter from a dear old friend, made it a letter containing several slices of green pear, and deliver it to everyone.

<img decoding="async"
