The net content is 350 g (5 satsuma mandarins), and the reference price is 980 yen (excl. tax). It's sold at supermarkets, drugstores, and the official online store nationwide. This launch shows a new form of citrus upcycling: keeping citrus that can't be distributed as fresh fruit due to uneven size or skin blemishes whole, through handwork that machines can't achieve.

Product design that chose handwork over machine efficiency

The biggest feature of "Marumaru Mikan" is that it syrup-preserves "a whole single fruit" without crushing the segments. Ordinary mikan processed goods center on slicing or segment-separating, premised on machine sorting and machine peeling. But small off-spec mikan, and off-spec goods with thin skin prone to blemishes, are hard to put on conventional lines because the flesh crumbles easily in machine processing. In its own announcement, Delta International explains that "skilled staff hand-peel each one carefully and process the whole fruit without crumbling the flesh," showing that it set aside yield improvement through mechanization and switched to a product design that makes the most of the size and shape individuality unique to off-spec fruit.

The satsuma mandarins used are Kyushu-grown. The light syrup with added honey is formulated to keep the refreshing acidity distinctive to satsuma mandarins while softening the faint bitterness of the peel. The standard of 5 fruits in 350 g -- "about 70 g per fruit" -- is equivalent to the S size (70 to 90 g) of fresh fruit distributed on the market, structured so that "fruit too small to sell as fresh" becomes the star inside the jar as-is.

Why citrus upcycling now -- organizing the background

Domestic mikan production is on a downward trend. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' "Fruiting Area, Yield and Shipment of Reiwa 4 Mikan," the Reiwa 4 satsuma-mandarin yield was 682,200 tons, down to less than about 20% of the peak (3.66 million tons in 1975). While production volume falls, the standards for fresh-fruit distribution have tightened around large and medium fruit, and the off-spec ratio of small and blemished fruit is actually rising by on-the-ground sense. In the ministry's food-loss estimate (fiscal Reiwa 4) too, off-spec and returned farm produce still make up a large chunk of the 2.36 million tons of business-related food loss.

On the other hand, there's change on the consumer side too. In the Ministry of the Environment's fiscal Reiwa 5 food-loss survey, about 60% of those in their 20s to 40s answered that they "actively want to buy off-spec or imperfect products," and the value axis is shifting from "off-spec = bargain" to "off-spec = story product." Behind "Marumaru Mikan" being sold at a reference price of 980 yen -- on par with or slightly higher than ordinary-price-range bottled citrus products -- lies this shift in consumer psychology.

Product-spec comparison table

Item

Marumaru Mikan

Typical canned mikan (S&W, etc.)

Sliced dried mikan

Form

Whole-fruit bottled (5 fruits)

Segment-separated canned

Round-sliced dried

Raw materials

Kyushu-grown off-spec satsuma mandarin

Domestic and Chinese-grown mixed

Many with no origin specified

Processing method

Hand-peeled, syrup-preserved

Machine-peeled, chemically treated

Round-sliced, dried

Net content

350g

Around 295 g

20〜50g

Reference price

980 yen (excl. tax)

200 to 300 yen

400 to 600 yen

Use

Dessert / gift

Cooking / home use

Tea / snack

Upcycling nature

Off-spec as the main ingredient

Not stated

Partially present

On-the-ground and industry reactions

From the citrus-processing industry, attention is gathering on the very idea of "packing a whole single fruit into a jar without crumbling it." A representative of an Ehime citrus processor commented to an industry journal: "Segment-separating and juice processing require capital investment, but hand-peeling plus syrup-preserving works even with a small lot. It's a form worth reference for production areas holding off-spec goods."

From produce buyers at food supermarkets, an assessment is also emerging: "Small satsuma mandarins are a challenge to clear from stock from April onward every year. Timing the April launch of a processed product shows strong linkage with the production area." Satsuma mandarins, even late-ripening varieties, finish distribution by the end of March, and the destination for off-spec fruit remaining from April onward had traditionally been limited.

In consumer reactions on social media, posts like "the aroma when you open the jar is close to fresh mikan" and "just put it on yogurt and it looks great" came one after another from the launch's first week, and secondary demand for gift use is starting to rise. It's reported that on Delta International's official Instagram (@delta_international_japan), the engagement rate of related posts rose to about three times normal within a week of the launch announcement.

Impact on readers -- the perspective of food businesses and processing professionals

Agriture runs the dried-vegetable brandOYAOYAin Kyoto and has worked on upcycling off-spec vegetables. From this Delta International case, there are three points food processors can learn.

"Keeping it whole" becomes differentiation: Upcycling in the direction of separating and milling already has many competitors, but the direction of "keeping the original form" holds down capital investment and has a strong visual impact.

A price range of "higher than usual" works: The 980-yen setting takes off the premise of off-spec = bargain. It's a price structure that reinvests what was saved on raw-material sourcing into "handwork."

April is effective as an outlet for seasonal inventory: Timing a processed-product launch to when leftover winter fruit is stagnating leaves large room for collaboration with production areas.

The same structure is applicable to storable vegetables like cabbage, onion, and potato too. If the previously reportedvegetable-powdering by upvegeis a representative example of upcycling in the powder direction, then "Marumaru Mikan" can be positioned as a representative example of "form-preserving upcycling."

Ripple effects on the industry -- the spread of production-area-linked upcycling

2026 became the year the Food System Act (promulgated June 2025) came into full force from April, and food-related businesses are legally required to pursue "food-loss reduction" and "fair trade." Handling off-spec farm produce will from now on become an essential theme built into business plans, not mere CSR activity.

As cases already in motion, the Loss Hell and Japan Post partnership、JA Kumamoto Keizairen's washi-light project、the expansion of the upcycled-food market, and other patterns of production-area x distribution x processing collaboration keep emerging. Delta International's "Marumaru Mikan" holds great significance in showing, among these, the lightest form: "a specialist trading house partnering with a production area on its own and completing it with bottling and a small lot."

Going forward, other companies' upcycled fruit products are likely to expand along the same "handwork × whole-form preservation" line. In 2026, as the full enforcement of the Food System Act puts exit strategies for off-grade produce under scrutiny, this case offers a useful reference for companies able to operate on the three fronts of small lots, handwork, and a standard price range. At Agriture, we want to explore the potential of similar "whole-form upcycling" as an extension of our dried-vegetable business.

Source

Delta International Inc., "Announcing the Launch of New Product Marumaru Mikan" (April 4, 2026) https://www.delta-i.co.jp/news/marumaru-mikan

coki, "Delta International's Ultimate Regeneration Method to Rescue Off-Grade Mandarins" https://coki.jp/sustainable/sdgs/74041/

Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, "Bearing Tree Area, Harvest Volume, and Shipment Volume of Mandarins, 2022 Crop" https://www.maff.go.jp/j/tokei/kekka_gaiyou/sakumotu/sakkyou_kajyu/mikan/r4/

Ministry of the Environment, "Estimated Food Loss Volume for FY2023" https://www.env.go.jp/press/press_01689.html

Delta International will release "Marumaru Mikan," an upcycled product using off-spec Kyushu-grown satsuma mandarins, on April 4, 2026.
